PAN HISTORY
The Philippine Association of Nutrition (PAN) Inc. was founded on 9 March 1947 by the country’s foremost experts who had envisaged good nutrition for Filipinos. Dr. Francisco O. Santos, biochemist and faculty of the University of Philippines, was the first elected president of the Association. He led a select group of the country’s pillars of nutrition work in pursuing PAN’s mission to increase national understanding of the country’s nutrition situation and promote action and measures for the nutritional improvement of families, communities and the country as a whole.
PAN organized into a single body all those who believed early on, in the multidisciplinary approach to nutrition. Thus, today’s membership as it has been in the last 61 years, reflects that distinct nature of nutrition work. Professionals in nutrition, food, agriculture, health, education, social development, economics and other related fields have continually banded together to achieve and promote the holistic approach to nutrition work. The PAN Student Chapters in the various schools introduce future nutritional professionals to the work that likes ahead.
PAN’s leadership in initiating the creation of the Institute of Nutrition in 1948, now the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology, remains as PAN’s perpetual shining star. The passage of Executive Order No. 94 dated 1 July 1947 establishing the Institute resulted from the vigorous advocacy work of PAN soon after the Association was organized itself.
In the following years, PAN helped promote the establishment of nutrition bodies including the Dietetic Association of the Philippines, now the Nutritionist-Dietitians Association of the Philippines in 1955 and the Nutrition Foundation of the Philippines, a private, non-stock organization devoted to community nutrition work.
PAN draws strength from its membership that cuts across disciplines, sectors and levels. In the last 61 years, the Association continues to work towards positioning good nutrition as a non-negotiable strategy for human development, particularly of children and women.
